Suppliers, Employees Help Company Reach 11-Percent Diversity Buy

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Chrysler Group is honoring two suppliers and three employees for their efforts in diversity supplier development.

"This year's honorees have shown tremendous dedication in each of their roles," said Tom Sidlik, member of the DaimlerChrysler Board of Management responsible for Global Procurement & Supply. "They set an example for others to follow and they are to be congratulated for their efforts."

The two suppliers being recognized as 2003 Diversity Supplier Development Award winners are United Parcel Service and Flex-N-Gate.

United Parcel Service (UPS), a logistics supplier, is recognized as Chrysler Group's Supplier of the Year. Since 1992, UPS has been committed to providing business opportunities to small, minority-owned and women-owned businesses. The Tier Two sourcing target for all DaimlerChrysler suppliers to minority-owned firms in 2003 was 6.5 percent. UPS successfully achieved an outstanding 12.99 percent. UPS is also a DaimlerChrysler 2003 Global Supplier Award winner, a distinction attained by only eight of DaimlerChrysler suppliers worldwide.

Flex-N-Gate, an exterior trim and body-in-white supplier of plastic, metal and mechanical assemblies, is recognized as Minority Business Enterprise Supplier of the Year. Since 1978, Flex-N-Gate has been an exemplary supplier to the corporation. Flex-N-Gate is a role model for other suppliers, minority-owned suppliers in particular, in the automotive industry. The company has demonstrated that it is flexible and able to meet the demanding changes that are inherent in the automotive industry while maintaining excellent service. Flex-N-Gate is an advocate for other minority businesses and highly respected in the business community for its many philanthropic contributions.

The three Chrysler Group employees being honored as 2003 Diversity Supplier Award winners are Donald Fergle, Marvin Washington and Ed Sprock.

Donald Fergle, International Procurement Services, is recognized as Buyer of the Year for his continued mentorship of minority businesses, the creation of a minority supplier resource list for use by his suppliers, and the support of business partnerships between minority and non-minority suppliers.

Marvin Washington, Exterior Trim Procurement, is being recognized as Purchasing Agent of the Year for his continued mentorship of minority businesses, supporting the minority sourcing initiative in a proactive manner, and being instrumental in ensuring that the Exterior Trim team achieved 12.3 percent in minority supplier content for 2003.

Ed Sprock, Logistics, is being recognized as Director of the Year for focusing the Logistics team in developing a plan to achieve its minority sourcing objectives. As a result of his efforts, the 2003 participation rate for Logistics carriers soared to 100 percent. Logistics achieved a 13.2 percent sourcing rate compared to a corporate objective of 11 percent and successfully included at least one minority carrier in all bids during 2003 calendar year.

The 2003 Diversity Supplier Development Award winners will be recognized at an event May 5th at Cobo Hall in Detroit in conjunction with the Michigan Minority Business Development Council's Procurement Council.

A diverse supply base that is reflective of the company's consumer base is a business imperative at Chrysler Group. Supplier diversity is one of many key measures employed by the Chrysler Group to rate its suppliers and procurement employees. Other value drivers include quality, cost, delivery and technology.
