May 03, 2004

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Pitney Bowes Inc. has received the number one ranking on DiversityInc.'s Top 50 Companies For Diversity list. Pitney Bowes zoomed up the list to first place overall from 27th only a year before. Pitney Bowes also ranked first in Recruitment & Retention up from eighth last year. The company also ranked eighth on the Top 10 Companies for Latinos.

"We are thrilled that Pitney Bowes has been recognized for our Diversity initiatives," stated Susan Johnson, Vice President, Human Resources -- Corporate Staff and Diversity Leadership. "Inclusion on DiversityInc.'s list is an important element in helping us validate that resources devoted towards Diversity are helping us accomplish our goals. In today's business climate, it is essential to demonstrate results in order to maintain dedicated company resources. In addition, it allows us an additional channel to reach external audiences who are interested in Pitney Bowes as a company that supports Diversity, whether they are a possible employee, potential minority supplier, or customer.

This year's Top 50 Companies for Diversity ranking is twice as detailed as last year's and is the most in-depth analysis of corporate diversity management, leadership and marketing ever. For the first time anywhere, valid standards to evaluate any company in the United States against the best were developed in every category.

To assess the companies' measurement programs for evaluating diversity success, they were asked, specifically, if they had data on four key areas: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate Communications (internal and external) and Supplier Diversity.

In the work-force area, where Pitney Bowes scored particularly well, companies were asked detailed questions about the demographics of their current work force, new hires, managers, top 10 percent highest-paid employees, and board of directors. They also answered several questions on retention and promotion practices and work-life benefits.

"Managing diversity is a competitive factor for any business, from sales and marketing to recruiting and retaining the best talent," said Luke Visconti, partner/co-founder, DiversityInc. "Pitney Bowes's outstanding showing demonstrates its national leadership in every aspect of managing diversity, from the commitment of Chairman and CEO Michael Critelli to the strong work-force numbers and measurement practices."
